Deep Car Scratches: How To Handle Them

Let’s be honest; even the slightest scratch on your car can really ruin your day. There are many ways your car can get a scratch, and most of the time, your car will encounter a scratch no matter what. The scratches vary from smallest to largest, but all of them can affect your car’s value. But the good news is that if your car gets a scratch, they are all fixable!

Light scratches are shallow scratches that happen when the clear coat of your car gets damaged. You can get a clear coat scratch from a common household item such as your car keys or from other cars in parking lots. On the other hand, a deep scratch goes deeper into your car’s clear coat layer and into the base coat layers as well. These scratches are more visible from a distance due to their raised appearance.

How to deal with deep car scratches

Fixing deep scratches on your car can be quite a headache. The good thing, however, is that most of the deep scratches can be fixed just like any other scratches. Well, it is possible to fix the scratches yourself, but if you have never done it before, it is best to take your car to a professional for it. Below is a list of how to fix the deep scratches;

1) Clean the surface where the scratch has been left using detergent or soap water, whichever one is available at hand. Make note of any areas that have already been affected by rust, as you do not want them making their way further into your car’s paint job.

2) Now, use sandpaper and start sanding down the affected area until it becomes smooth again. Sandpapers normally come in different grades but make sure you are using the right one for every sanding step.

3) After the sanding is done, the next step is to polish the car’s paint job. There are many types of polishing compounds available in the market for this purpose but make sure you select one that can be easily washed away with soap water after doing its job without leaving any residues behind.

4) Now that the scratched area has been sanded and polished, it is time to apply some touch-up paint onto the affected part of your car’s exterior. Note that you should only apply the extra coat of paint after the previous coat has dried up. But before you begin, make sure to use a primer on the scratch first because it will help enhance the quality of your final touch-up job.

6) Once you are done with this whole process, be sure to wax and polish the area surrounding the scratch too. To learn more about how to fix deep scratches, check out https://loughboroughrefurbs.co.uk/how-to-fix-deep-scratches-on-a-car/

That’s it! When you notice a scratch on your vehicle, first assess it before taking any other move. Getting the necessary tools and equipment is crucial in completing this job. If you are not confident in doing it yourself, it is best to take your car to a professional to avoid making things worse.
